Unfolded
Below is my final first year project at The NFTS in which the brief was to create an interactive drama where the player's interactions determine what happens to the characters in the scene. Unfolded follows Heather as she revisits a significant memory she has of her childhood friend, Olivia. As the player you decide how Heather remembers her actions. By making decisions in the past you affect how Heather deals with the present. I wanted to use this project as an opportunity to employ cinematic techniques such as editing, split screens and framing to explore multiple perspectives and the fluid nature of memory.
Unfolded was exhibited at PC Gamer Weekender in March 2016.

Unfolded was produced over a 7 week period. During this time I developed the story and characters with a writer, who then wrote a branching script. I wanted two clear art styles to signal the shift between past and present. To achieve a slightly dreamlike and ephemeral aesthetic, I looked at watercolours and animated films such as Only Yesterday for inspiration. I used delicate pastels and soft tones to belie the melancholic nature of the memory.
I discussed the finished script with a cinematographer. I was then able to storyboard the scenes which allowed me to limit the number of assets needed to only those seen in shot. With a locked down script and storyboard I was able to enter fully into production. I was responsible for character creation, 3D modelling, camera choreography, programming, games design, UI design, audio implementation, animation and lighting.
I worked with a composer, who wrote the score and recorded it with a string quartet. I also worked with a sound designer who provided the sound assets.
